How to Pick Out Your Ideal Car Subwoofer

March 24, 2016 By admin

There’s nothing like bumping some heavy bass through your new car audio system. The rumble you feel in your stomach is almost magical! Today, there are so many different car subwoofers out there as well as subwoofer installation services. With so many options out there, how can one who is new to the car subwoofer life go about choosing the one that fits them best? Here are some basics on car subwoofers as well as car subwoofer installation.

Choosing the Ideal Car Subwoofer

  • What is Your Car Like?

You need to have an idea of what vehicle your car subwoofer/driver will be into. The size of the car and amount of space will directly affect the size and/or amount speakers you can install. Even if you don’t have a car at the moment, planning for the one you will have is a smart idea.

  • Measurements?

Once you’ve decided what vehicle your car subwoofer is going into, you can just go out and buy a speaker if you really want to. However, it’s best to do some research first, whether it be simply to talking to some friends in the know, or going to a local car audio installation company and getting someone with experience to voice their opinion. You could also simply get on the internet and get some info on your car, especially if you don’t physically have it yet. Some common measurements you’ll come across are: rear width, rear track, and total trunk capacity. Having these measurements can help you to calculate the dimensions of the trunk (if that’s where you are putting your car subwoofer), which will better help determine what drivers to purchase. The depth and width, while still necessary, aren’t as essential as the height of the trunk. This measurement becomes less important to get right if you’re looking at getting smaller drivers, such as an 8″ driver, or a 10″ driver.

  • Car Subwoofer Enclosure Types

Next is choosing which type of enclosure you will use to house your speaker. There are two common types:

  1. Sealed: A completely airtight enclosure, very basic in design, good speaker performance, improved bass response.
  2. Ported/Vented: Similar to a sealed type, but with a vent/port installed, used to emphasize a particular frequency, improved reproduction of low bass frequencies, low distortion

How you want your car subwoofer to perform will mostly likely decide for you which type of enclosure you will choose.

  • Buying the Car Subwoofer

Once you’ve gotten all the information about your car and what enclosure you’re going to use, you can go out and purchase your car subwoofer. When you first get your eyes on a speaker of interest, you’re immediately going to see a few things that may be confusing for those who aren’t subwoofer connoisseurs:

  1. Power Handling (Watts RMS and Max) – This is basically stating how much power your subwoofer can handle before it starts damaging itself. Generally, the higher the power, the better it can handle bass when your system is turned up to its loudest. The power rating measurement that you’re looking for is the Watts RMS rating. This shows exactly how much power your subwoofer should take to make satisfactory (and often amazing) bass. If you can’t find an RMS rating, but a Max power rating is evident, generally you can simply divide this amount by two to get an idea of the WRMS rating for the particular speaker.
  2. Size of the subwoofer (8″, 10″, 12″, 15″) – Fairly self-explanatory, it’s just the size of the driver. The most popular ones seem to be the 12″ type, because they have a decent cone size without being massive.
  3. Amount of voice coils (SVC or DVC) – The amount of voice coils can help decide which type of amplifier to purchase. Basically, the amount of voice coils is the amount of inputs to your speaker. If your subwoofer has only one voice coil (Single Voice Coil, or SVC), it has one input for you to wire the sub to the amp. If your subwoofer has two Voice coils (Dual Voice Coil, or DVC), it has two inputs for you to wire the sub to the amp. People will generally try to get a DVC sub for multi-sub projects, because it gives them more options when they come to wiring their subs to their amp. But, if you’re only going to be using one subwoofer, you should show more interest in an SVC subwoofer. It doesn’t have any significant advantages over a DVC sub, while still maintaining comparable performance attributes. They also make the subwoofer installation process easier if you’re confident enough to try doing the whole thing yourself.
  • Subwoofer Installation Process

Probably the easiest step in the process of upgrading a car audio system is installing it. The subwoofer installation will more often be done by a professional auto electrician, meaning it will work first time! However, it can also be the hardest step if you do it yourself. This is why it is recommended to go to a car audio installation shop to get it done right, unless you have a lot of prior experience.

Recall your measurements:

  1. Rear Width – Simply the width of the car at the rear
  2. Rear Track – Track is a little trickier though. Track is commonly referred to as the distance from the center of one tire to the center of the tire on the opposite side. If you’ve ever been driving in rural areas with lots of sand, or you’ve driven through mud, you will have seen an excellent example of how track looks.
  3. Trunk Capacity – It’s essentially how water/air your trunk could hold if you filled it up. The measurements to calculate this are: Width of Trunk x Length of trunk x Height of Trunk, or LxWxH. It is best to measure the height of the trunk against the back seat, because that’s normally where the subwoofer and enclosure will be placed.

Car Speaker Installation Guide

October 21, 2015 By WP Premium Support

Everything listeners are supposed to hear from their car stereo comes from the speakers. They produce the highs, the lows, and all the sounds in between. Vehicle manufacturers don’t always think about great sounding speakers when they’re designing a new car model, they’ve got plenty of other issues to think about. But car audio manufacturers are always experimenting and pushing the envelope to make better sounding speakers. You’ll hear the difference that commitment makes when you install brand-name speakers in place of the factory-installed originals. For those who are all about DIY, here is a Car Speaker Installation Guide which helps you install it yourself.

Car Speaker Installation Guide

Are you in the Shrewsbury NJ area and looking for Car Speaker Installation services? Auto Works serves the Monmouth County and the Central NJ area.

1. Disconnect the battery

Your car doors are going to be open while you install the new speakers. Disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery prevents you from draining your battery and getting stuck without power. It also protects you against a dangerous short circuit in your vehicle’s electrical system.

2. Prepare your components

Remove the new speakers and hardware from the box. If you’re installing full-range speakers, you’ll typically have the two speakers, speaker wire, screws, speed clips, and instructions. Some aftermarket speakers include grilles as well. If your speakers do not come with grilles, use your factory grilles. If you’re putting in component speakers, you’ll also have the separate tweeters, the tweeter mounting hardware, and crossovers.

3. Disassemble door

Depending on the factory speaker locations, or where you’ve decided to custom-mount your speakers, you can now begin to remove your old speakers. Your instructions will show you how to remove the factory speakers. To begin, we used a window crank removal tool to pry off the crank cover. Then, we removed screws and removed the crank. Next, we removed a few screws and the door cup. There was one more screw beneath the door pull cup, so we removed it, then slid the door panel up and off the door.

4. Removing the Factory Speaker

The factory speaker is secured to the car door with four screws. We removed them, then pulled the speaker out of the opening. Using a flat head screwdriver, we popped off the factory harness and removed the factory speaker.

5. Prepping the crossovers

Component speaker systems use an external crossover to divide the frequency bandwidths between the tweeter and woofer, so we needed to solder the free Crutchfield wiring harness to the crossover input wires. We cut off the wiring harness’ quick slide connectors and stripped the wires. We also stripped the crossover’s input wires and placed some heat shrink tubing on them before twisting them together with the wiring harness wires.

6. Installing the tweeters

We chose to angle-flush mount the tweeters. Acoustically and aesthetically, this is usually the best way to mount component tweeters. However, angle-flush mounting requires you to drill a hole in your door panel large enough to accommodate the entire tweeter cup. We decided where to mount the tweeters, then used a pencil to trace around the outline of the tweeter cup. With the aid of a hole saw kit, we drilled out a hole for the tweeter, then trimmed the cutout with an hobby knife. Each manufacturer has a different system for securing the tweeter to the mounting surface, this one used a spring clip that attaches to the back of the tweeter with a screw to achieve a tight, secure fit. We angled the tweeter up and in towards the driver’s seat for optimal imaging.

8. Completing the installation

We connected the woofer and tweeter leads to the crossover with the attached quick slides. We used the included wire ties to gather the excess cable and routed the speaker wires around the window crank. Then we dropped the door panel back onto the door. The crossover fit snugly between the door panel and the door frame, so we simply dropped it in. Then we replaced the screws, the door pull cup, and the window crank. Now we have full-bodied, detailed sound, a deep and spacious soundstage, and vibrant stereo imaging what a difference!

5 Common Mistakes When Buying Remote Starters

October 13, 2015 By WP Premium Support

Remote starters you to start your vehicle by remote control without actually being inside the vehicle or using the key. It is one of the best additions that you can make to your vehicle. When buying a remote starter, however, the buyer can easily make common mistakes. Here are five common mistakes when buying remote car starters.

5 Mistakes Buying Remote Starters

Remote Starters in Millstone Township | Autowortks

Buying remote starters without enough range

The packaging on the remote car starter will state the range of the product. It is imperative to remember that windows, walls, and buildings may cause interference in some units. Most people believe that range is not important. Not a lot of people start their vehicles from more than 1,000 feet away, but they want to start it from inside a building. This is where the transmitter power comes into place.
Remote car starters will be used in other places than the office or at home. They are sometimes used at parking garages, the mall, hospitals, sporting events, etc. Don’t shortchange yourself with the transmitter range – if you are unsure, get a more expensive and powerful unit.

Not Getting Professional Remote Starter Installation

Professional installation is key to a quality remote car starter experience. Do not trust your vehicle to the lowest bidder! It can be quite complicated to install remote starters in today’s vehicles and they need to be installed properly. A trained professional can easily do the remote starter installation and will avoid costly mistakes.

Buying A Poor Quality Remote Starter

You can buy a remote car starter at the local auto parts store for a very low price. It comes with an instructional DVD that claims that you can install it yourself. The truth is, these remote starters are of low quality than those you can purchase at specialty retailers.
Most people can’t tell the difference between a good brand and a low quality one. A good rule of thumb is to search out the best shop in your market. It is a fair assumption that they will be selling and installing what they perceive as a high quality brand. The internet will be your best friend. You can post in forums or ask friends who are car enthusiasts.

Millstone Township Remote Starter Installation | NJ Remote Starters

Not Getting the Proper Feature Set

Remote starters offer a lot of convenient options. Be sure to ask the right questions when buying your remote starter. Some models are simply what they sound like: A remote starter. They start and stop the vehicle from a distance. That’s it and that might be good enough for you. Certain models can also do trunk release and keyless entry, defrost the rear windows and heat seats. One mistake is not adding keyless entry on vehicles manufactured recently. When the vehicle is running, factory keyless entry does not function. So when the vehicle is remote-started, the factory keyless entry will not unlock the doors.

Buying it from One Place, Getting it Installed in Another

This is another big mistake. You always want to have your remote starter installed at the very same place that you bought it. Most quality shops will not install a remote starter that was purchased elsewhere. If the place you are considering buying a remote starter from does not offer remote starter installation, do not buy it from them. You need to have the remote starter installed in the same place it was purchased from.

Car Detailing – More Than Just for Looks

October 3, 2015 By admin

Car detailing is done for many different reasons, not just purely for looks. Proper car detailing improves and maintains the health of your car. While car detailing takes a bit of effort or costs some extra money, the benefits to reliability, safety, and beauty make it all worth it.

Benefits of Car Detailing

Red Bank Car Detailing | Monmouth County Auto Services

  • Paint Health – Proper cleaning, polishing and waxing greatly extend the life of a car’s paint. Your paint protects the metal underneath. If allowed to degrade, rust and corrosion can wreak havoc on your car with potentially devastating results. Trying a reasonably priced car detailing package specifically dealing with paint is a good place to start.
  • Road Salt – In areas that experience seasonal snow fall, road salt can be one of the best reasons to regularly detail your car. Deposits of salt and mud can build up in wheel wells and under the chassis. Given enough time, these deposits can eat right through your paint, causing damage to the chassis that isn’t easily repairable.
  • Improved Lighting Ability – Part of proper car detailing is making sure your headlights and taillights are clean and free of damage. Even small amounts of dirt and grime on your lights can significantly affect their performance.
  • Interior Condition – By regularly cleaning your interior, you get rid of bad odors, protect surfaces from fading, and help prevent cracking and discoloration of the dash panels. Not only does this greatly improve resale price, it also adds comfort for the driver.
  • Wheels and Tires – Oils, solvents, brake dust, and other chemicals frequently encountered during normal driving can have a negative effect on your wheels and tires. Proper car detailing will not only keep them looking good, but you also reduce the risks of cracking in the sidewalls or failure of the wheels due to corrosion.

Monmouth County Car Detailing

As you can see, proper car detailing not only helps to keep your car looking spectacular, but also helps to keep it running great both inside and out. This not only improves value and safety, but also personal comfort and pride in your car. AutoWorks offers top quality remote starters and remote starter installation as well as window tinting, backup camera installation, detailing, and other auto services to towns in the Monmouth County area such as Middletown, Red Bank, Oceanport, Rumson, Little Silver, Marlboro, Freehold, Dayton, Aberdeen, Manalapan, Point Pleasant, Millstone Township, Long Branch, Spring Lake, Holmdel, Shrewsbury, West Long Branch, Fair Haven, and many more. Remote Starters – Why You Should Get One

September 19, 2015 By admin

Remote starters have begun coming standard with many newer luxury vehicles, but chances are if you own a Toyota, Honda, or other economical brand, you probably don’t have one a remote starter installed on your vehicle. Here are some reasons why it could be a great idea to consider remote starters for your vehicle:

Advantages of Remote Starters

Long Branch Remote Starters | Monmouth County Auto Services

  • Remote Starters Help Keep Your Car Warm Or Cool –

Depending on where you live, this could be one of the best reasons to buy and install a remote starter on your car. Nobody likes having to get into a frozen car in the middle of a harsh winter. Same goes for a sweltering car during the dog days of summer. With a remote starter, you can start your car and the heater or A/C well before you get into your vehicle.

  • Remote Starters Warm Up Your Engine Without You Having to Go Outside –

Its always better to drive away with an engine that has been warming up for a few minutes than immediately driving away after starting an engine that has been sitting in freezing temperatures for hours. With a remote starter, you don’t have to worry because you can start your engine before you get to your car so by the time you get there, its warm and ready to go.

  • Safety –

There are way more benefits of remote starters other than your own comfort. Pre-heating a car that has been sitting in a frozen parking lot with snow and ice pelting it from all directions makes it way easier to defrost and remove ice and snow from the windows, mirrors, and headlights.

  • Remote Starters Add to Re-sell Value –

Having a remote starter on your car increases the re-sale value of your vehicle if you wish to trade it in or sell it in the future.

  • Remote Starters Provide Security Features –

Top 10 Auto Repair Shop Features to Consider

September 11, 2015 By WP Premium Support

When you are choosing an auto repair shop, you must consider many things before making final decision. Here are the top 10 auto repair shop features to consider that can help you choose.

Top 10 Auto Repair Shop Features

Monmouth County Auto Repair Shop

Monmouth County Auto Repair Shop

  1. Labor – The hourly flat rate quoted to you at the auto repair shop is not for labor alone. The cost of labor varies depending on the extent of your car damage, the experience of the technicians, their equipment, shop overhead, and benefits paid to employees.
  2. Parts – The price of parts varies; while belts and fuel filters are cheap, transmissions and engines can cost up to thousands of dollars. If the parts aren’t available, the mechanic will have to seek them out elsewhere.
  3. Cost – The cost of auto repair is the combination of labor, parts and diagnostics. Get this price before the auto repair shop starts on your vehicle, which is normally customary in shops.
  4. Machinery – A good auto repair shop uses advanced machinery for the diagnostics and auto repair. Seek out mechanic shops with the latest in automotive repair and diagnostic equipment.
  5. Training – Ensuring your mechanic is properly certified will help you feel better about your chosen auto repair shop. Seek out mechanics with ASE certification, and check out the walls of the auto repair shop for further accreditations.

  6. Communication – Open communication every step of the way will reduce problems down the line, including misunderstandings about price and timeline. This includes reviewing service agreements ahead of time and staying square on when you can expect your vehicle.
  7. Outsourcing – Oftentimes if a part isn’t available, a mechanic must look into his sources to locate the right part; this usually includes partner auto parts shops. If a mechanic doesn’t have the capabilities to diagnose or repair your vehicle, he may send you to another shop.
  8. Legacy—Longstanding family establishments in your town with a good reputation could be your best bet in terms of cost. Meanwhile, others prefer standardized bigger establishments if they don’t know of a smaller local choice.
  9. Reputation – When in doubt about the reputation of an auto car shop, ask around and check out the better business bureau. Friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers are all great sources for finding out who the good mechanics are in town.
  10. Timeline – An auto repair shop will advise you of a timeline before starting on your project. However, further unforeseen damage or the need for additional parts may hinder the process and extend your timeline.

Identifying Car Brake Repairs

September 3, 2015 By WP Premium Support

The brake system is one of most important parts in a car. It must be maintained and repaired immediately when it has a problem. For most common car brake repairs, it’s easy to identify when there is a problem. Squeaky brakes, sticky brakes, and brakes that pull to one side are fairly noticeable issues that indicate it is time to visit your trusted auto mechanic. Learn about the most common types of car brake repairs and how to identify them based on symptoms.

Repairing Squeaky Car Brakes

Squeaky car brakes are one of the most common symptoms of an unhealthy braking system. In most cases, hearing those squeaks means that your brake pads have worn out and need to be replaced. However, squeaky brakes may also simply be an indication that brake dust has built up on the pads. If such is the case, then a simple cleaning may be enough to remedy the situation.

Sticky Car Brakes

Brakes that “grab” during deceleration may be hindered by buildup of grease, oil or other contaminants on brake pads and other components. Typically, the use of a degreaser is adequate enough to fix debris buildup. Sticky brakes may also be the cause of a warped brake drum or rotor. If such is the case, then resurfacing or replacement will be necessary.

Brake Fluid Repair

A number of brake system ailments stem from either low brake fluid or dirty brake fluid. Generally, low brake fluid is the result of a leak, which can be identified by looking for fluid puddles under the car after it has been parked. Heat and other factors can also degrade brake fluid overtime. If a visual inspection of the fluid reveals a dark-colored liquid, then it is time to flush and replace.

Repairing Car Brakes That Pull to One Side

Car brakes that pull to one side may be an indicator that your brakes need to be aligned or re-adjusted. This is a fairly simple and inexpensive repair. However, pulling brakes may also be a warning sign of more serious repair problems, including a bent wheel cylinder or loose wheel bearings.

Squishy Car Brakes

If your brakes feel squishy when you press on the brake pedal, then this is likely the result of insufficient brake fluid in the system. Checking for a leak and refilling the system may fix the problem. If not, then bleeding the brakes may be necessary.

Car Brake Pedal Pushes to Floor

A car brake pedal that pushes all the way to the floor is an indicator of two potentially dangerous car brake repairs – a worn master cylinder or hydraulic fluid leak. In either case, the vehicle should not be driven until the problem has been identified and repaired.
